Jean Omer Marie Gabriel Monnet was born on 9 November 1888 in the city of Cognac, France. Today recognized as "Father of Europe", Monnet was an influential supporter of European unity and is considered to be the main inspiration behind the famous "Schuman Declaration" of 9 May 1950, which led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community. Later, the date of the Declaration has been adopted as Europe Day by the European Union and it is generally considered as the birth date of the Union.

Jean Monnet finished his formal education at the age of 16 and started learning business from an agent of his father's company. He travelled widely for the family business as a successful businessman. When his father died, Monnet returned to his hometown and turned around the fortunes of the family business, which was experiencing difficulties at the time.

In the First World War, he served to the French President as an economic intermediary between France and its allies and shortly after, he was named Deputy Secretary General of the League of Nations upon its creation in 1919. In the Second World War, he became President of Franco-
British committee which was set up in order to coordinate the combining of the two countries' production capacities.

After the British government sent him to the United States to oversee the purchase of war supplies, American president Franklin Roosevelt was impressed by Monnet's way of thinking and coordination skills, why he made Monnet one of his trusted advisers. Monnet later urged Roosevelt to expand the production capacity for military equipment in the United States even before US entered the war, by launching the Victory Program. After the war, British economist John Maynard Keynes stated that Monnet, through his coordination work, had probably shortened World War II by a year.

Jean Monnet was a top advisor to the French government and he dedicated himself to the cause of European integration and also was the first president of European Union's executive body, between 1952 and 1955.  Although the famous declaration is named by France's minister of foreign affairs, Robert Schuman, "Schuman Declaration" was instigated and prepared by Monnet. The Declaration was based upon idea that all German-

French production of coal and steel should be placed under one high authority. By that, any future possibility for war would be prevented, because the production of these resources would be shared by the two most powerful countries on the continent.

Although he left school at the age of 16, Monnet is today recognized as an international businessman, financer, diplomat, statesman and man who had a vision, a vision that is still alive. He is the one who advocated a united Europe and who promoted cooperation and peace.

Some of the interesting and inspirational thoughts of Jean Monnet:

“There is no future for the people of Europe other than in union.”

“Building Union among people, not cooperation between states.”

“Nothing is possible without men, nothing is lasting without institutions.”

“Nothing important is done in the United States without lawyers.”

“The fusion of economic functions would compel nations to fuse their sovereignty into that of a single European State.”

“There will be no peace in Europe if the States rebuild themselves on the basis of national sovereignty, with its implications of prestige politics and economic protection... The countries of Europe are not strong enough individually to be able to guarantee prosperity and social development for their peoples. The States of Europe must therefore form a federation or a European entity that would make them into a common economic unit.”

“Have I said clearly enough that the Community we created is not an end in itself? It is a process of change, continuing in that same process which in an earlier period produced our national forms of life. The sovereign nations of the past can no longer solve the problems of the present: they cannot ensure their own progress or control their own future. And the Community itself is only a stage on the way of the organized world of tomorrow.”
